Ready For Reform. Ready for Europe?
The Tory leader opened this years conference proclaiming change, describing the incumbent Government as tired, discredited, disunited and clapped out. That may well be the case, yet whilst welfare reform and in particular incapacity benefit were high on the agenda, Europe and the UK's EU status was never very far away. Media commentators continually probed for an angle of controversy following the recent Irish "yes" vote.
John Redwood former Conservative Minister for Wales and arch euro sceptic, confirmed the current Tory position on Radio 5 live. Dismay at the Irish vote on one hand yet hope the Czech Government will fail to ratify the Lisbon Treaty before the next election.
Two problems remain. Problem one the Treaty is ratified before the next UK election; then what, the Conservatives refuse to put forward proposals for this scenario. Secondly the Conservative Party is not elected. In this case assuming the current Government is re elected, its European Superstate, full steam ahead and welcome to President Blair. What would The Prime Minister make of that; watch this space.
